Supporting trauma-affected women to improve their relationship with food and drink

There is a systemic issue of drinking and eating irregularities that directly correlates to the impact trauma has on a woman. My goal is to help women who suffer in silence, and give them the tools to self heal in their own safe space.

As a specialised coach using a blend of nutrition and psychology modalities, I focus on enhancing motivational change. Drawing from my expertise and personal lived experience, I’ve curated an 8-week online course to take you from feeling out of control and stuck in repetitive self-loathing actions to being an empowered, more confident woman.
Overview

What's included in this online course?

The course provides a set of building blocks to enable a greater awareness of your
cycle of behaviours with food and drink, with education as to why and where it comes from, and layering strategies to help you regain control and master your balance with your choices. The process is to help you create the desire, need and confidence that you have the ability to make changes in your life - choosing your own values to live by, moving forward - and articulating what your future self looks like—all to enable you to make the right choices to have the human experience you want.

Your Life In Review

  • Connect to how the influences from your family of origin are creating behaviours and patterns in your life today.
  • Provide psycho-education to help you understand your emotional model and life factors that can influence behaviours.
  • Help you understand your cycles of behaviours - the triggers, resulting behaviours and consequences that follow.
  • Identifying the costs of that behaviour to your life.
  • Explore the 'how and why' of these problems fundamentally occurring, sharing research-based education to give you the knowledge for better decision-making.

Answer Evoking Questions

  • The whole idea of Change Talk is for you to hear the change in your own voice. It’s for you to talk the change itself.
Through a process of educating and guiding you, I ask you evoking questions about what is important to you, what do you want, and how do you think you can do it?
  • Your role is to answer them in your truth and read out loud.
  • It is proven that you are likely to create a more sustainable change when you hear yourself making the argument about change, which is your voice and the ideas you hear.
  • Building a connection to what needs, reasons and desires you have for change.

You And Your Future Self

  • Connect to who do you want to be and what does your future self look like?
  • Help you establish a set of values that are relevant to that life you want to lead, and become conscious of behaviours to practice being more in control of your choices.
  • Help you understand the behaviours that connect to those values - and an awareness what happens when you don't live by your values.
  • This will help you change your thought patterns,  and make step changes in your overall life, not in just what you eat and drink.

Tools, Skills, And Techniques

  • Throughout the course you will learn a new self-talk that validates your experiences.
  • You will learn to respond to yourself with kindness, detach from the strong inner critic, and make room for your pain in a place of acceptance.
  • Developing skills to ground yourself in the emotional storms, and stop being pushed around by those situations that are inevitably going to show up that have created these unwanted behaviours.
  • You will learn how to you set boundaries and how to protect your energy so food and drink can stay in the place that it should, to nourish you, help you thrive, help you keep showing up every day to be the woman that you want to be.

Context

The Mind and Body

The brain and body have remarkable coping mechanisms to deal with complicated feelings and experiences resulting from the trauma. Most trauma victims become addicted to food and drink to enhance positive emotions and reduce negative ones, a form of self-medicating - and in many cases, there can be a disconnect between the physical body and mental state. Trauma or neglect may impair the brain's physical function, leading to mental health problems, such as low self-esteem, which could later lead to high-risk behaviours, poor impulse control, an inability to regulate emotions, and developing dependence on substances to create a cerebral high.
Context

Empathetic Witness

The result of trauma at any age can be excruciating and dehumanising loneliness driven by the toxic shame of exposure to trauma and the lack of an empathic witness. If you are looking to do this course, you are likely to be someone who has been exposed to some kind of trauma - within your childhood or in your adult life - and you didn’t have an empathic witness when those things happened to you. You didn’t have someone there to validate you, tell you it was okay, protect you, pick you up, and hug you when you were afraid. If this happened to you in your childhood, you likely didn’t have your development needs met by your parents or your significant family taking care of you.
The Common Cycles

With Automatic Behaviours

Food Patterns: You obsess with food, whether to restrict food and deny yourself, or emotionally feed yourself, overindulge and binge.
Drink Patterns: You may hit the bottle too hard and laugh off the dirty hangover. Making fun of your behaviour, when you actually feel shame.
Exercise Patterns: You constantly torment your body with over-exercising, hitting the gym or excessive classes. Or you are the extreme opposite, and no movement at all.
Sleep Patterns: You have less than 7-8 hours sleep, waking up several times in the night. You suffer from brain fog.
Self Image Patterns: Constant self-criticism of not being good enough, stuck in a cycle of to self-loathing the image in the mirror.
Normalised Behaviour Patterns: You struggle with the question "do I really have a problem?" This is your normal, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you feel.
Self healing

Is within your reach

80% of traumatised women don't seek help, can't afford it, or cannot get into government-funded programs. However, research studies tell us that people, all with issues relating to food and alcohol consumption irregularities, can heal themselves, given the correct set of tools, that they can work through in a safe space.

The whole process that this course is about is to ask you evoking questions, to educate you on stuff that matters, and then ask you the questions relevant to your needs. And whilst it might seem a little bit silly to read out your questions and reflections out loud, there is a method to this madness. This is so that you hear the words. This is so you believe what you are writing down. This is so you connect to what actually you are choosing to say are in fact what you need. Because when you hear it, you believe it. And when you believe it, it’s more likely that you’re going to do it.
The Emotional

The Cycle of Behaviours

The Course will not show you a diet of a cup of this and a teaspoon of that. Make no mistake. This is me helping you understand your emotional model.
You will learn there are common themes to what happens to you when you have had trauma in your life.
There is an event, which creates a behaviour, and then there is a consequence. It is a repetitive cycle.  The driver of these behaviours is born from a need for distraction from difficult thoughts and feelings, creating repetitive cycles to soothe and defer pain. To numb and escape from stress and self-judgment. And, like most of us, it’s tough to say that you have a problem with it because you don’t understand what the problem is. You don’t know how this keeps happening to you.
